These days being green is fashionable and as a result allotments are in high demand. But with so may would be veg-growers, council waiting lists are endless.

The National Trust have set aside 1000 allotments, created on Trust land, so that more of us can have our own little piece of paradise. Each of the growing spaces are created on communities' doorsteps throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. There are 40 different locations in total, varying in size, from smaller plots suited to first-timers, and larger plots for old-hands.

Plots are available through the Landshare website. Landshare was set up by the popular TV-chef and nature enthusiast, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and since its inception in 2009 has been a great success, with more than 55, 000 growers, sharers and helpers. The site aims to 'match-make' between keen growers and available land.

It was a perfect match for garden blogger Sarah Brown and her family, who have become the new tenders of the Trust's 1000th plot. The plot is situated at the Grace and Flavour community garden at the Hatchlands Park estate, Surrey.
